Storage Shed Plans

With the wide selection of storage shed plans available online being able to build your own even with basic carpentry skills shouldn’t prove a problem.  Along with plans you can purchase there are plenty of free ones available for you to quickly download if you wish.

When it comes to any types of plans for building a storage shed they will come with not only illustrations, but also step by step instructions.  Plus you will also be provided with a list of the materials and tools that will be needed so that you can construct yours.  In some cases they may even provide you with photographs as well as handy tips to help the whole process of building storage shed much easier.

However before you do go out and purchase your storage shed plans there are three things you must take into consideration first. Below we take a look at just what these things are.

1.What The Shed Is To Be Made From?

What materials are used in the construction of your storage shed will ultimately determine how much you spend on the project. Certainly most people like to build theirs from wood but remember to save on the cost of maintaining yours you could in fact build them from PVC vinyl or aluminium instead.

If however you do intend to build yours from wood then you need to decide between such materials as cedar or wood composite. The main benefit of opting for cedar is that it looks much nicer, but with wood composite it is much cheaper to buy and won’t need as much maintenance.

2.What Is The Shed To Be Placed On?

If money is limited when building your own storage shed you can place it directly on to the ground. However, there is much more chance of moisture being able to get in to the material especially when made from wood. It is far better if you give it a solid foundation made from either concrete or paving slabs.

By putting down proper foundations you are ensuring that the base of the shed is going to not only be square but also level. Plus it will ensure that moisture from the ground won’t be able to sleep up through the floor and cause damage not only to the shed but the items stored in it.

3.Do You Need To Obtain Planning Permission?

The first thing you need to do before obtaining any storage shed plans is to see whether planning permission needs to be sought before construction can take place. Unfortunately in some areas the local authority may need you to obtain formal permission no matter how big or small the shed is before it can be erected. If you don’t get permission then the local authority will be within their rights to get you to take it down.
